Latasha first contacted MACDC in 2015 when she moved into her father’s home to care for him in Germantown with her two children. When her father became increasingly ill, he needed to go to a nursing home. The facility tried to claim his assets, including the home where Latasha and her children were living.

She says, “It took a whole year, but [Housing Director] Stephanie Butler walked me through everything I needed to do” to retain possession of the home.

Later, during the pandemic, she lost her job as a dental assistant. Her money started to run out, and she went into delinquency on her mortgage payments. Latasha tried to take money from her pension to pay what she owed, but the mortgage company would not accept it. Again, Stephanie gave her great advice: “I followed everything she said to do.” She and her children were able to stay in the home.

Most recently, in 2023, Latasha broke her ankle and needed to go to a rehab facility, which resulted in her losing her job. By the time she got out and was cleared to work again, her family’s home was already in foreclosure. Again Stephanie helped her get her house back.

Latasha currently works three jobs–for the parking authority, as a Certified Nurse Assistant, and a dental assistant–and continues to live in the home with her two children, who are in middle and high school.

She says, “Stephanie is amazing and helps people so much. The CDC is really a pillar in the community. I was on the brink of being homeless…I can’t tell you how much [the foreclosure counseling] has helped.”
