Ayiana started attending our summer reading camp at age 4. We caught up with her at home the following fall at age 5. Her mom Siani says reading camp made a big difference in her behavior and her attitude toward books.

Before going to camp, Ayiana was a hyperactive kid who played on her tablet a lot at home and bounced around with no set routine. “Now she goes to bed early, she’s engaging with books and with other kids, she’s getting socialized and better prepared for school, and she is learning to read and write,” says Mom.

Learning to read is so important for a child. Only a third of children in the Philadelphia School District meet reading standards. Many children don’t have the support they need to learn to read—or access to books—at home.

Our summer reading camp and other literacy programs in Mt. Airy and the NW Philly area get kids reading and make sure they stay on grade level.
