Mt. Airy Community Development Corporation is proud to announce that Downtime Bakery celebrated its much-anticipated grand opening at 6624 Germantown Ave. Thursday, December 5, 2024! Owner Dayna Evans is the former editor of Eater Philly and has developed an impassioned following by selling loaves of sourdough bread, bagels and pastries at her East Mt. Airy home and local farmers markets over the past two years. Philadelphia foodies are eager to enjoy her full menu in Downtime’s new brick-and-mortar bakery.
Dayna, who trained at Machine Shop bakery in South Philly and Ten Belles in Paris, works alongside partner Sam Carmicheal to offer cafe seating and a menu that includes artisan sandwiches and locally-roasted coffee along with fresh bakery items.
When Dayna was searching for a place to establish her business in 2023, Mt. Airy CDC recognized the opportunity to help realize her vision and continue strengthening the neighborhood. Downtime Bakery has now become the latest addition to the historic Winston Commons at 6614-24 Germantown Avenue.
The adaptive reuse of this iconic 19th-century building in 2005 was one of Mt. Airy CDC’s defining revitalization projects on the Germantown Avenue commercial corridor. Years later, Winston Commons continues to serve as an anchor for Mt. Airy’s business district, incubating compelling locally-owned retailers. The Bakery joins a busy destination block with Best of Philly winner Pax Flora Goods, Zsa’s Ice Cream, Grocery Outlet, Perennial Refill Hub, and more to come in early 2025.
